Acupuncture
During an Acupuncture treatment, very fine sterile needles are gently inserted into specific sites which have been specially selected just for you. Whilst the needles are left in to do their job, you can close your eyes and relax. The practitioner will leave you to rest until it is time to remove the needles.
Many people avoid giving acupuncture a try, because they think the needles may hurt. The needles used in Acupuncture are very fine and treatment sensations and effects vary from individual to individual, you may experience many different sensations during your acupuncture consultation including, tingling, tickling, pressure, warmth, cold, as well as dull aching, itching, pricking, burning sensations and sometimes nothing at all.
If you feel uncomfortable at any time during treatment, please let your practitioner know and they will make the appropriate adjustments. Your comfort is our primary concern.

- Acupuncture promotes blood flow. Everything the body needs to heal is in the blood, including oxygen, nutrients, immune substances, hormones, analgesics (painkillers) and anti-inflammatories. Restoring proper blood flow is vital to promoting and maintaining good health. Blood flow decreases as we age and can be impacted by trauma, injuries and certain diseases. Acupuncture has been shown to increase blood flow and vasodilation in several regions of the body. If there is a long term reduction in blood circulation to any part of the body, the functioning of that area is gradually reduced over time. Acupuncture works at re-establishing the blood circulation and thereby improving function by increasing blood circulation, thus resulting in reduced pain and tension and increased flexibility.
- Acupuncture stimulates the body’s built-in healing mechanisms.
- Acupuncture releases natural painkillers. Inserting a needle sends a signal through the nervous system to the brain, where chemicals such as endorphins, norepinephrine and encephalin are released.
- Acupuncture reduces stress. This is perhaps the most important systemic effect of acupuncture. Recent research suggests that acupuncture stimulates the release of oxytocin, a hormone and signaling substance that regulates the parasympathetic nervous system.
- Acupuncture works accumulatively, meaning with each treatment the results become stronger and last longer. Each treatment builds on the last.
Vital Acupuncture & Massage use a variety of different styles of acupuncture which include; Traditional Chinese Acupuncture, Tung Acupuncture, Balance Method Acupuncture, Distal Needling Acupuncture, Quick Relief Acupuncture, Zhu's Scalp Acupuncture and Auricular (Ear) Acupuncture. |
Tung Acupuncture, Balance Method Acupuncture and Distal Needling Acupuncture places needles distally, or far-away, from the symptomatic site. To the untrained eye, these placements may seem random. For example, a shoulder pain can be addressed with needles in the wrists, ankles and/or knees. These needles are strategically placed for optimal results. Relief is often felt on the table within moments. To explain this physiologically, the practitioner is placing needles in specific areas of dense nerve tissue to signal to the brain to release certain natural pain-killing chemicals and to stimulate blood flow. With Distal Needling Techniques you regularly hear patients describe it as if we’ve “turned off a light switch” of symptoms or pain. Acupuncture is most commonly known and used to treat pain but can be also used to treat a wide range of health conditions and symptoms.

Your first treatment
- Upon arriving at the clinic, clients fill out a new patient questionnaire detailing their main complaint, relevant medical history and consent to treatment.
- We ask that you arrive 10-15 mins early for your first appointment to complete a new patient questionnaire or it can be printed and filled in ahead of time.
- Your practitioner will collect you from the reception waiting area when it is time for your appointment.
- Help yourself to some water whilst you are waiting.
- During your first appointment you will receive a thorough assessment prior to receiving any treatment in order to develop a diagnostic picture. The practitioner will do things, like, looking at your tongue and feeling your pulse or test your range of motion.
- After an assessment your practitioner will ask you to get onto the treatment table, ready for your treatment.
- Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into the skin. Needles may not be inserted into the area that is painful at all as other areas of the body can be used to treat the area of discomfort.
- Once the needles are inserted, you can then relax, close your eyes, meditate or sleep for a period of approximately 45 minutes, depending on the treatment protocol being used. Your practitioner will inform you of all procedures and discuss a treatment plan with you. You are free to ask any questions and we encourage you to to do so.
- Your practitioner will remove the needles when the treatment time is finished.
- We ask you to drink some water after your treatment to assist the body to process the treatment.
- During the initial stages of treatments, your practitioner will aim to offer symptomatic relief, both by addressing the symptom, as well as addressing the underlying cause. As the symptoms recede, more emphasis is placed on addressing the underlying cause and improving the function, so that a prolonged resolution of your condition can be attained.
- Maintenance treatments are required to produce sustained long term improvements in function and for complete resolution of symptoms. Depending upon individual circumstances, the frequency of maintenance treatments are generally between once fortnightly to once every 6 weeks.
In accordance with the registration standards of the Chinese Medicine Board of Australia, all registered Chinese medicine practitioners are obliged to meet standards of safety and efficacy.
