How long does acupuncture take to work and how many consultations will I need?
Acupuncture generally has some form of immediate effect on the body. Some people depending on their own sensitivity can feel the effect straight away while others may take some time to notice a change.
Acupuncture works on a cumulative effect and the benefits increase with the number of treatments. For long term chronic ailments treatment may take longer than short term acute conditions.
The actual treatment time in this case will last approximately 50 to 60 minutes. During your appointment, your practitioner will allocate time to discuss changes you have experienced or observe and will assess diagnosis improvements. The practitioner may utilise other methods of treatment with your permission. Generally, the needles are left in for between 10 and 50 minutes.
You should, more often than not, expect some improvement from the first treatment however several treatments may be required to hold the treatment. If we use an analogy similar to taking antibiotics. You don’t just take one antibiotic and expect to be instantly well again; your doctor prescribes a course of antibiotics, to be taken regularly over 7 to 10 day, as it has an accumulative effect. Or we could use a gym analogy. Nobody would go to a gym thinking that they are going to get fit and build muscles in just one session, no matter how hard you may try.
Getting results from your acupuncture consultation is much the same as taking antibiotics or going to the gym to get fit: it usually takes multiple visits of over a period of time before significant and lasting results occur.
Though, one consultation fixes do occur, they are the exception not the rule and they should not be banked on. However, in the majority of pain cases, you should expect improvement after the first treatment.
Generally speaking, you can expect to have to visit the clinic a number of times to achieve your health goals. Basically, the longer you have had your problem, or the more serious the problem is, the longer you can expect the consultation process to take.
Typically, in the beginning, more frequent consultations are required. As results emerge and the resolution of the underlying cause of the presenting problem approaches, consultation frequency is reduced.
Please speak to your practitioner during your consultation to hear their thoughts on how long it will take for you to get better using acupuncture and Chinese medicine.
Your Treatment
With your permission, our practitioners will apply acupuncture needles in areas specifically designed for your individual condition. We may ask how you are feeling after the needle is inserted. If you have a specific pain, for example, you may find the pain easing or disappearing altogether. You may also notice that the pain has moved.
The number of needles depends on the condition. Once the needles are in, we usually leave the room. This allows you time to relax and the treatment to have a greater affect.
The needles are often left in for approximately 25 - 50 minutes.
Your Plan
After the treatment, your practitioner will talk to you about what can happen next. An effective treatment plan may require more than one consultation to ensure your symptoms abate and do not return. Herbs may also be recommended as part of your plan.
Your practitioner will discuss your best options and respect your right to decide on further action.
The choice is yours.
